I have a friend that's having a baby girl soon, and I made this hat to help keep her little head and ears warm this winter. If this winter is going to be as extreme as this summer has been, she'll definitely need it.

These hats are so cute on sleeping babies, and the softness of the yarn is sure to keep them cozy so they stay asleep.

Big Flower Beanies

I think these little beanies are adorable on their own, but even more adorable on a baby or child. I've seen beanies with flowers on them, but the flower is always a small accessory. The flower is definitely in full bloom and steals the show on these little hats.

There are a ton of different color options, and I think it would be cute to do a football team color combo.

Rosette Hair Pin

These little rosettes are so cute, and they don't even require a needle and thread. All you need is a hot glue gun, and you're set. There are several you-tube videos that show great tutorials on how to make these. I used THIS one. The lady in the video is correct when she says you'll get glue on your hands and you may get burned.

I used gray dupioni silk for this flower. I also sandwiched some feathers between a piece of gray felt and the rosette. I'm really into feathers these days. I'm already looking forward to making many more of these with different types of fabrics. I've seen several necklaces decorated with these little rosettes, so that may be a fun project. These will also be great embellishments on purses, clothing, shoes, purses, and headbands. The possibilities are endless.

Banner Card

I got this card the other day from a sweet and crafty friend of mine (thanks for sharing your craftiness with me, Elisabeth). She is one of the most creative people I know, and I'm totally going to borrow this idea for making my own stationery.

She just cut small triangles out of some scrap fabric and put some fray check around the edges (to keep from fraying). Then she used a sewing machine to sew them on like a banner. Genius, right?!? I thought so!

Little Miss Ali

One of my best friends has a 4 year old little girl. I made this doll for her since she has a new baby brother now. I wanted her to know how special she is and that her roll as a big sister is very important.

I had so much fun making this doll, and I wish I would have had her when I was a little girl. Back when my mom and dad used to sing me to sleep, I would have a ribbon in one hand (the grosgrain was my favorite) and the thumb of my other hand in my mouth. I would rub the ribbon together until I fell asleep. This doll's hair would have been perfect for me. :)

I'm not sure how long it took me to make her since I worked on her a little bit on the weekends for several weekends. I had so much fun sewing her together and adding the small details to her face.

Crochet Owl Hats

I fell in love with these owl hats when I saw them. They have so much personality, and they look great on babies and children. I made this particular hat for a newborn baby boy. A good friend of mine that I've known since middle school had a baby boy, and his nursery has sort-of an owl theme. I showed her this hat, and she fell in love with it, too!

Another friend of mine had a baby girl, so I made a baby girl owl hat. I think she's so cute with the little flower.

Framed Peg Board

I'm loving my new framed peg board. I found a stellar deal on a black custom frame at Hobby Lobby, and I immediately knew what I wanted to do with it. I stopped by Lowes on my way home to get some supplies, and then I got to work. By the way, if you don't have a saw, the guys at Lowes will be happy to cut your wood for you. Just bring your frame into the store, and they can measure it out for you.

Here are the supplies I used:

Primer (I used Rust-Oleum spray primer)
Spray Paint (I used Rust-Oleum High Performance Enamel in White)
1 picture frame (mine was about 29-in x 34-in)
1 peg board (cut slightly smaller than the frame)
Staple gun
Staples (my staples were 3/4-inch... make sure they're long enough to go through the peg board)
2 (1x2 board cut slightly shorter than the width of your frame)
Hammer
Nails (I used 1-inch nails... make sure yours are long enough to hold everything together but not too long that they will go through the frame)
Picture frame hanging kit

I couldn't believe the deal I got on this frame... Originally $165 on clearance for $20.

The first thing I did was prime the peg board. This is important because the peg board is porous, and you don't want your white paint to soak into the board giving you a splotchy look.

Once the primer has dried, you can spray paint it white. I did a couple of coats on each side.

Once the white paint has completely dried (overnight), staple the peg board onto the back of the frame. I put a staple every 4 or 5 inches around the peg board, and I feel like that is sufficient. By now you should have a beautifully framed peg board.
But wait...
We're not finished yet.

You don't want the peg board to be flush with the wall because you need to stick the little "pegs" into the holes. You don't want the pegs scratching up your walls, so you need to place a piece of 1x2 wood on the top and bottom part to give you room in between for hanging the pegs.

Make sure the wood is straight, and nail it on. I used about 8 to 10 (1-inch) nails just to make sure it stayed on.

This is what it should look like now... a piece of wood on the top and bottom of the frame.

The last step was attaching the frame wire onto the back of the peg board. Now it's ready to hang.

See; we have plenty of room in the back for the pegs.

Now your frame is ready for decorating with your favorite craft tools.

Boy Sock Monkey Hat

I've been friends with April since 6th grade. We met in drama class, and we just clicked. We've been friends ever since. She is due with her second child in April, and she is having a boy. I made this hat for him, and I'm sure he will look so cute in it. I can't wait to see pictures of a baby underneath that hat instead of a lamp.

I used the same pattern as the girl sock monkey hat that I made another friend's daughter. I used red yarn for the boy hat instead of pink, and I replaced the flower bow with a pom-pom on top of the hat.

Vintage Jewelry Magnets

I made these magnets for a special friend for Christmas this past year. We went to Anthropologie and saw some adorable magnets that had an un-adorable (if that's not a word, it is now) price. It looked like they took vintage jewelry and glued a magnet on the back.

So that's exactly what I did! I bought some vintage clip-on earrings and used pliers to carefully take the earring back off. Etsy and the thrift store... or even your grandmother's jewelry pile are great places to look for earrings, brooches, necklaces, etc.

Once I took off the back of the earrings, I glued a round magnet to the flat surface with a hot glue gun. I think they turned out really cute, and I almost didn't want to give them away. I'll surely be making more of these in the future. They make great gifts, and they look so pretty on the fridge.

Bear Earflap Hat

My friend from high school is having a baby girl, and I made this hat for her. I made it a little bigger than a newborn size, but it will be perfect for next winter and maybe the one after that, too!

I wasn't able to go to her baby shower, so I mailed the gift to her. I started the hat one day last week after work, and I stayed up until 2AM finishing it. There's nothing like being a procrastinator. I should have known better than starting it the day before I had to mail it.

I know Melissa's baby girl will look precious in this hat, and I think it will keep her head and ears warm.

Sweet N' Spicy Brown Sugar Scrub

I made several of these sugar scrubs for Christmas gifts. I tried some out as I was making it, and it left my hands feeling so soft. It smells delicious, too! It reminds me of those scrubs at Bath and Body Works, and most of the ingredients are probably already in your pantry. The only thing I may try differently next time is using something other than almond oil. I had a hard time finding it in the grocery store, and it was almost $7 for an 8.45-ounce bottle. I may try peanut oil unless anyone has any other suggestions.

Want to make one of these for yourself? You'll need the following:

1 cup brown sugar
1 cup granulated white sugar
3/4 cup almond oil (or more)
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 (16-ounce) glass container with lid (I got mine at World Market)
1 Cinnamon stick

In a medium-sized bowl, combine all ingredients until thoroughly blended. Be sure to break up any lumps from the brown sugar or from the spices. Spoon into the glass container and secure with lid. Scoop a teaspoon or two of the scrub on your hands and gently massage in circular motions onto your skin. Leave on for 3 to 4 minutes before thoroughly rinsing. The scrub will tighten on your skin.

Girly Sock Monkey Hat

Meet Maggie! She is the precious daughter of a dear friend of mine (hi, Alison). Her birthday was in November, and had this hat in mind for her. In order to get a picture of her, I had to bribe her with juice.

I bought the pattern from the Sock Monkey Kook store on etsy. It came together pretty quickly, and I was so happy with the finished hat.

Headband

I sent this headband to go along with the shoes I made for my cousin's baby girl. I love the way the flowers curl up and look like they have petals.

I couldn't find any baby headbands, so I bought an adult one and re-sized it. I just cut a chunk out of it and sewed it together.

There are so many possibilities of crafts (besides headbands) using these flowers. You can use them to embellish pillows, sweaters, lamp shades, and purses. You can also use a large bead or rhinestone for the center instead of seed beads.

You'll be surprised at how easy these are to make. The only tools you need is a hot glue gun and a pair of scissors.

Auburn Baby Shoes

I actually made these little shoes a while back ago, and I had plans to post them right when college football was first starting. Procrastination gets the best of me sometimes. I made these for my cousin's baby girl. My cousin and his wife met each other while attending college at Auburn University. Needless to say, they are huge Auburn fans.

I wanted to make something fun for their daughter when football season rolled around, but it was painful for me to use these colors.
See, I'm a University of Alabama fan. Auburn is our biggest rival. But I set my color pride aside and brought out the orange and the blue. It wasn't so bad, and I think they turned out quite cute.

I love the felt buttons. It's almost like they were made just for these shoes. I was at the store looking for regular plastic buttons, and I came across these.

Baby Boy Blanket

A friend of mine had a baby boy yesterday, and I made this blanket as a gift. This was my first "big" crochet project and it took me about 5 nights to finish it. I travel for work sometimes, so it's nice to have a project so I don't get too bored.

I was really pleased with the end result. I've never worked with yarn so soft before. You can almost see the softness in the picture below. Since this is for a baby, I used an organic blend. Organic blend yarns are more expensive, but the results are worth the price.

I love the color combination in this blanket. It's perfect for a baby boy, but the color combinations are endless. My mom suggested a white and linen color to throw on her couch.

Black Birdcage Veil

Many of you know that I turned 30 at the end of August. While I was excited to celebrate another birthday, I have to admit that I was not happy about leaving another decade behind me. My sweet friend, Meredith made this veil for me so I could celebrate in style. :) She glued some barrettes on the back of the flower so I could clip it to my hair.
Now that I'm 30, it's not really that bad. People keep telling me that 30 is the new 20. I'm just thankful to be alive and healthy enough to celebrate a 30th birthday!

Crochet Flower Beanie

Today is Bella's 4th birthday, and I made this beanie just for her. Bella is the daughter of a good friend of mine from high school. I wish I had a picture of Bella to put on my blog so you could see how darling she is.

Even though it's like an inferno outside now, I hope this hat will come in handy over the winter months. Winter isn't too far away.

I love the addition of the flower to the hat. It makes it extra "girly."

Bitty Booties

My cousin and his wife had a baby girl back in February, and I made these little shoes for her. I've been enjoying hand embroidery lately, so I wanted to incorporate some of that in these shoes. I found a picture of a mama and baby bird online, so I embroidered them onto the felt. Drawing the mirror image for the matching shoe was a bit tricky, but I got the hang of it.

First, I traced the patterns onto the felt. I also flipped these patterns over so there would be a left and right shoe.

Then I stitched a blanket stitch along the center of the top of the shoes and hand embroidered the bird patterns onto the front of the shoes.

The shoe was really starting to come together after I stitched the back together.

Attaching the bottom of the shoe to the top part was a little tricky, but once I finished pinning it together it was easy to stitch.

...And here is the shoe almost finished, turned inside-out. I know my stitching looks horrible from the inside.

So, here is the finished shoe... oh, wait! It needs something else...

Crochet Newsboy Hat

I've been on a crochet binge here lately. I made 3 hats last weekend, one hat this week, a flower, and I'm working on a pair of baby booties. It's very addicting. I made this particular hat for my cousin's baby that was born in November (I'm a little late on that one). I bought this pattern from adrienneengar's shop at etsy. I was really surprised at how fast this came together. I think it's because of the hook size and the thickness of the yarn.

I found myself dreaming about crochet a couple of nights ago. I woke up in the middle of the night for some reason and started dreaming of crochet stitches as I drifted back to sleep. It wasn't one of those frustrating dreams like you are taking a test and you can't figure out the answers to the questions to save your life (I still have those, too!). It was a dream that my head was lying on a pillow of soft yarn that I was making into crochet stitches.
I know I'm weird. You don't have to tell me. :)

Earflap Hat

I've been practicing my crocheting, and this is one of the projects I've been working on. I love the little earflaps on this hat. They sure will serve a good purpose keeping little ears warm in this cold weather.
I really learned a lot while working on this hat. I learned how important it is to count stitches. My first attempt was pitiful. It looked like a frisbee of some sort.... nothing like a hat. It killed me to have to unravel it, but who wants to wear a frisbee on their head!?!

I'm going to give this hat to my little nephew. I think it will be really cute on him. Hopefully I'll update this post with a picture of him wearing it. He doesn't live in the same city, but maybe I can get his parents to email me a picture. :)

Happy Valentine's Day

My hubby gave me a dozen of these beautiful lipstick pink roses. I've been enjoying the scent of them every time I walk by.

I've also been working on another tutu, so I played around and dressed my doggy up like a bride. I laughed so hard because I felt like a 2 year old torturing my male dog by playing dress-up. I'm so sorry, Charlie! I'll never do it again. :)

Fabric Flower

Last time I visited my family in Birmingham, my friend Meredith showed me how to make these precious little flowers. I was so excited when I learned how to make these because of the endless possibilities of colors combinations (or solids). There are also endless possibilities of things to attach them them to.... like this headband (although it wasn't really attached in this picture).

I actually sewed this flower to a barrette and wore it in my hair last night at a Mardi Gras ball. It was really cute with my ivory dress with black straps and sash. I didn't get a picture of it in my hair since we were rushing out the door to meet friends.
These flowers would be great for embellishing clothes, purses/bags, baby shoes (on a smaller scale).... you name it! I'm already thinking of more possibilities.

Cutsie Little Tutu

I made this tutu for a friend whose little girl, Reagan was turning 2. It looked so adorable on her, but she didn't know what to think when her mama put it on her. It wasn't until her mama put it on herself (just playing around) that Reagan really wanted to wear it. It was too cute!

I've made a couple of these so far. One with elastic and the other with a satin ribbon. My favorite one is with the ribbon. The knots tie much tighter on the ribbon, and I feel like it's more secure. I also like the pretty bow in the front (or back, if you choose)

Felt Heart Wreath

Aubrey went hunting this weekend, so this was the perfect craft to keep me busy while he was gone. I stopped by JoAnn Fabrics and bought 3/4 yard of red felt, 12-inch styrofoam heart, and some straight pins. I cut out circles from the felt and pinned them on the wreath. It took a few hours to get everything finished, but I watched "27 Dresses" and "Definitely Maybe" while working on it. I was really happy with how it turned out.

I have a little felt left over, so I'm going to try to tackle another craft. Crafts are really great de-stressors for me. I only wish I had my crafting buddies a little closer by so we could exchange ideas more often.

Wooden Earrings

I've been meaning to post these earrings for quite some time now. My friends (Elisabeth and Meredith) made these for my birthday last year. I couldn't believe they had made them. They had all sorts of colors, shapes, and patterns that they had made. I have worn these many times, and every time I wear them, I get a new compliment on them.

My favorite thing about these earrings is that they aren't heavy at all. I don't do well with heavy earrings. It grosses me out to know that the hole in my ear is stretching. Eek!
I keep telling Elisabeth and Meredith that they need to start a shop on etsy. I'd totally shop there!

Argyle Ornaments

I wish I had enough time on my hands to give everyone a hand-made gift for Christmas. I guess I could if I started now for next year. I saw these ornaments on another blog, and I immediately knew who I wanted to make these for. I have a couple of friends that are starting a "craft tree." All of the ornaments on it will be hand-made. I know these will be so cute on their tree.

These are fairly easy to make, and I'm excited to start doing more hand embroidery in the future. I made an extra one to hang on my tree, and it looks really cute.

Pete, the Pumpkin Penguin

My brother-in-law's girlfriend absolutely loves penguins. Every time I see a penguin, I think of her. I was browsing blogs this past week, and I came across this penguin pumpkin... I knew right off the bat who I was going to make it for.

Camo Tag Blanket

It's been a little while since I've had time to sew. I had some leftover Mossy Oak hunting camo fabric from 2 years ago. I used it to drape over a gift that I gave Aubrey on our wedding day. It's doing no good just sitting, so I chopped it up and gave it a purpose.
I was thinking I could also do a blanket with hunters orange ribbons all around the blanket instead of alternating colors. Aubrey gave me the idea of doing sports colors like Alabama (crimson and white) and Auburn (blue and orange) around, too. Good idea!

Instead of sewing my tag on the front of the fabric, I sewed it into the blanket like one of the ribbons. Since this is a dark "boy-ish" fabric, I thought it would be an eye-sore if it were on the front. I think I like this idea. I may start incorporating it like this on all of the items I sew. We'll see.

Now the men have no excuse not to bring their babies hunting. Um, well, I guess being still and quiet may be a challenge.

Tailor-Made Tea Bags

Happy Mother's Day!

Wow! I haven't made a post since 2008... This is loooong overdue.
I saw this idea in the Martha Stewart magazine, and I knew it's what I wanted to make my mom for Mother's Day. She loves tea, especially mint.

I didn't use the embellishments that Martha used (yes, we're on a first name basis) because I really didn't want to spend money on tools that I probably wouldn't ever use again. I had some of these flowers left over from scrapbooking, and they worked out perfectly. However, I did buy the cotton string.

I wish I would have bought a larger tin so more tea bags would have fit, but I've promised the rest of the tea bags at a later time. I cut out some scrapbooking paper to fit the inside of the tin's top so the tea bags could be labeled.

Each flower represents a specific tea flavor

I used cheesecloth for the actual tea bag. I cut out a rectangle (8-in x 16-in) and put 2 TBSP loose tea at the center of the top. I rolled it up and folded both sides over and tied with the cotton string. Then I put a flower at the tip of the string and tied a knot so the flower wouldn't fall off.

Painted Herb Pots

Aren't these herb pots the cutest! I've seen them for sale in places, but it's MUCH cheaper to make. I bought these terracotta pots at a craft store and the black chalkboard paint at Lowes. I painted the rims of the pots as well as a rectangle in the center of the pot. I used tape to outline the rectangle so it would be clean and sharp.

When I got home yesterday, I found these herbs in my carport that my mother-in-law left for me. I got dirty today and transplanted them into my little pots. These are perfect to sit inside my kitchen window sill since it's too cold outside for them to live. It will save me lots of money because fresh herbs are pretty expensive in the grocery store, and I love cooking with fresh herbs.

Burpies

This is my first burp cloth to sew, and it's so cute. My sister's roommate wanted a burp cloth to go along with the bib (made with this same fabric) I made for her to give as a baby gift. I used the Alexander Henry 2-D Zoo fabric, and I think it's so cute for a boy. They look like little animal crackers on fabric. I bought the fabric from ebay because I can't find it in fabric stores where I live.

I used chenille on the back of the cotton fabric because it's very soft AND absorbent.... practical for it's use. It's about 8.5 x 15-inches.

While sewing this, I ran out of thread on my bobbin (bottom spool). Well, I spun the thread on the bobbin, and when I went back to sew, my needle went crazy. I took the whole bottom of the sewing machine apart only to find that I didn't thread it right. Mercy! Well, at least it was a quick fix. Whew.... thank you Lord!

Pillowcase Dress

I've always loved these little dresses. I think originally they were made out of pillowcases, but now most of them are made out of cut fabrics. This one was not a good first one to make because it was a little hard getting the circles straight. I think I did okay, though.

This little dress is great because it acts as a dress for baby girls and a long shirt for older girls... so it's not one of those pieces of clothing that only lasts a season. During the winter, the child can wear a turtle neck and tights underneath. It's perfect for all seasons!

Bibs

My newest project is sewing bibs. I've only made 2 so far, and they are pretty easy. I haven't mastered putting on a snap (I think there may be a tool for that), so I did a velcro attachment. These are pretty large bibs. I did a medium size one... maybe for a big baby (like I was) or a small toddler. For the back, I did terry cloth because Hobby Lobby doesn't have chenille fabric. Terry cloth is less expensive but not as soft. The soft minky fabric would be a good backing, too!

I used a fabric from the Sandi Henderson collection for the pink bib, and the polka dotted fabric is from Hobby Lobby.

These will make great gifts for the mom-to-be along with some matching burp cloths (later project) and appliqued onesies.

Baby Shoes

Look at these cute little shoes. I bought a pattern for shoes, and this is how they turned out. The pattern says that it will take about 30 minutes to make, but it took me a good 3 hours. Um, can we say s.l.o.w.... My 2nd pair took 2 hours.

I'm not sure how comfortable these would be for a baby because of the seams inside the shoe, but they sure will look cute. Maybe socks would help with the comfort??? I also think that the ribbons will come untied really easily, but a double knot may work better.

I got the pink and brown fabric and the zebra fabric from Hobby Lobby. Small prints work better since the shoes are so small.

These sizes are for newborns, but next I'll probably make them bigger. What if the babies have big feet?

Tag Security Blanket

These security blankets are one of the main reasons I wanted to start sewing. I know that sounds crazy. Most people want to make clothes or pillows, but for some reason I fell in love with these precious little things. I know exactly why... When I was little, in order to go to sleep I would have to have my thumb in my mouth and the fingers on my other hand would be rubbing a ribbon together. It had to be a certain kind of ribbon, too. Either a grosgrain ribbon or a satin ribbon with a rough back side. It had to make a certain noise and have a certain feel. I was very picky with my ribbons.

I put all different kinds of ribbons on these blankets... just in case the child has a special preference like I did. They measure about 12-13 inches square. The front of the blanket is a soft cotton, and the back is the soft minky material.

I love these fabrics shown. They're from Sandi Henderson's Farmer's Market collection. They can be pretty expensive, so I try to get a better deal from ebay sellers. Hobby Lobby has some really cute fabrics (and 40% off coupons on their website and in Sunday papers), as well as Amy Butler, Michael Miller, Robert Kaufman, Heather Bailey, and Joel Dewberry.

Applique Onseies

These are the most creative gals I know. Elisabeth and Meredith (my sweet friends) made the cutest onesies for our friend, Alison... actually for her baby. They bought plain onesies and did applique by hand and some hand embroidery, too! Elisabeth has a book that has directions for several types of stitches, and they were sweet to teach me how to do this. Meredith and I went shopping at Hobby Lobby and bought a ton of embroidery thread, fabric, and lots of other tools for me to have on hand for my appliques.

These are some onesies that I made for another friend of mine whose baby shower is this weekend.

Okay, check out my labels. Aren't they so cute!?! I ordered them from Jennifer's Jewels on etsy. These are fray proof, and she has a ton of different labels. If you need custom printed labels, check her out. If you've never heard of etsy, you've got to check it out. It's like going to a craft show without even leaving your house. It's a website where crafters can sell their homemade things, and there are some adorable things on there like jewelry, clothes, accessories, and a thousand other things, too!

If you haven't read my story of how I came up with this label name, it was my nickname that my great-grandmother Durrett gave me when I was a little girl. My first name is Margaret (however, I go by my middle name, Maryanna), which was her name and is my grandmother's and mother's name. Since Maggie is a nickname for Margaret, and my cheeks were always rosy, that's where this "Maggie Pink Cheeks" came from. She called my sister (Catherine), "Suzy Sunshine." Don't ask me where "Suzy" came from, though because I have no clue.

Tribute to my great-grandmother

Grandmother Durrett died over 2 years ago at age 100. She was the sweetest and cutest little lady. We called her "Mrs. Proper" because she'd always know the answers to any etiquette question, and she also practiced proper etiquette ALL THE TIME!!! Sweet Grandmother Durrett... we miss you, and we'll see you again when we are with Jesus.

Sewing Machine

Meet my new friend:
Aubrey gave me a sewing machine for my birthday in August. It came with 5 free sewing classes that were far over my head. I was so nervous in the first class because I hardly knew how to plug in the thing.
I'm taking more risks now and have even made a few things. I'm really into making things for babies... I know what your thinking. No, they aren't for me. I think baby things are so cute because they're little.... Little things are easier to sew, too, which is good for me as a beginner.

I love my sewing machine. Eventually I want to take quilting classes. I'm not too big on the "country" looking quilts, but I love the ones from Amy Butler, Heather Bailey, and Sandi Henderson's collections.
